- W2022986102 abstract "The induction of complete and mosaic mutations by nitrous acid has been studied in the haploid uninucleate fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. An adenine forward mutation system affecting colony colour has been used in which additional adn− mutations occurring at five or more other loci in an adenine-7 strain give white instead of red colony colour on yeast extract agar medium. The ratio of those mutations appearing as completely white colonies to those appearing as mosaics does not alter over the survival range of 100–101%. This finding contradicts the hypothesis that nitrous acid generally causes mutations in only one strand of DNA and that with increasing dose more and more of the original mosaics are changed into completes through inactivating hits on the other DNA strand. Large numbers of cells from mosaic colonies were respread. None of them gave rise to further mosaic colonies. This indicates that nitrous acid-induced mosaicism arises at one of the early division following treatment and that no persistent instabilities are induced in this system." @default.
