- W2023002374 abstract "Electrochemical machining (ECM) is a relatively new non-conventional machining process, in which the type of surface produced has been found difficult to control. Often macro defects are present that require subsequent removal by hand and such problems have led to the process' losing industrial favour. Work for this paper has shown the reasons why macro defects are produced on electrochemically machined surfaces and how they can be avoided in practice to give integral surfaces. The integral electrochemically machined surfaces produced have been characterized in terms of Ra, skewness and kurtosis for a range of steels. It has been found that changes in cutting conditions, particularly electrolyte flow velocity and current density, produce significant variations in surface parameter values. For example, for certain stainless steels a change from a positive to a negative skewness can be effected by an increase in electrolyte flow velocity. The surface parameters were measured using a Talysurf 3 interfaced to a Commodore PET microcomputer and over the range of materials and conditions tested variations in the parameter values were found to be as follows: Ra = 0.15–2.50 μm; skewness, from −0.6 to +0.7; kurtosis, 2.5–6. The ECM tests were carried out in a linear flow cell using a 10 wt.% NaCl in water electrolyte. The ECM rig was designed to give current densities of up to 0.5 A mm−2 and an electrolyte flow velocity of up to 32 m s−1, values typical of industrial installations. It was concluded that, by both the careful manipulation of the cutting conditions and the choice of work material, surfaces could be produced that were defect free and possessed prespecified surface parameter values." @default.
