- W2023062711 abstract "Recent work on the urban hierarchy has emphasized world cities and the effects of globalization on the creation of transnational city networks. Urban hierarchies still play an important role, not only among countries, but within them as well. Social media research, specifically the online network Foursquare, provides a new source of data with which to examine regional urban hierarchies. This paper uses data on retail, service, and food venues collected from the Foursquare to paint a picture of consumption trends in the contemporary southeastern urban hierarchy. In doing so, it highlights links between the urban hierarchy and consumption patterns. In the process, the paper calls for a revitalization of economic geography amid new sources of information." @default.
