- W2023134087 abstract "An internal medicine journal published by a royal college should have three major aims. The first is to publish high−quality original research across the field of internal medicine. In today's global village, to be really successful in this area, a journal must attract papers which are of interest to physician scientists around the world. We are fortunate in Australasia in having an outstanding medical research base in both the clinical and pre-clinical arenas and this is reflected in the quality of original manuscripts sent to the Journal over the last year. Outstanding papers have been published in most fields of internal medicine, with a wide readership evidenced by the number of hits many of these papers have attracted on the Journal's web site. The Journal is now arguably the major international showcase for medical research from Australasia. The second role of an internal medicine journal is to educate both the Fellowship and physicians worldwide in internal medicine. A series of excellent review articles has been published over the last year, covering topical, therapeutic and diagnostic issues in internal medicine with a uniformly high standard. The third role of an internal medicine journal is to provide a broad range of articles of interest to its readership. Keeping with this, a number of new sections has been introduced in the Journal including In the Public Eye, an Ethics in medicine series, an increased number of Occasional articles and, in the last year, a short series by eminent medical scientists describing their career in medical research and some of the influences that led them to take up a medical research career. The hope of the Editorial Board is that every issue of the Journal will contain several original research and educative articles of interest to each of the major disciplines of internal medicine and that, in addition, there will be a number of general interest articles covering broad topics that appeal to all physicians. Considerable success has been achieved in all three areas over the last 12 months. Nowadays a scientific medical journal is judged not only by its readability − which is a very subjective thing and difficult to quantify − but by comparison with broadly equivalent journals through impact factors. The latest impact factor reflects papers published some years ago and the recent major changes in the Journal will not be fully reflected in the impact factor until 2004. The best clue we can get as to any increased profile of the Journal is through the number of hits on the Journal's web site. The latest information indicates that many articles are accessed thousands of times electronically, suggesting that the Journal is read. Undoubtedly, this will be reflected by an increase in the impact factor over the next few years. In keeping with this, the Journal is now forced to reject a higher percentage of papers than in the past, with less than 50% of full original articles being published and with case reports now published in letter form. At the end of the day the Journal will stand or fall on the quality of the original research it publishes and Fellows are encouraged both to submit their own best work to the Journal and to raise the profile of the Journal with medical researchers that they interact with, both in Australasia and overseas, as a good place to publish. A great deal of work on an honorary basis goes into producing the Journal each year. The editors’ responsibilities have increased in recent years and I would like to thank them all for the great contribution they make to the Journal. In particular, special thanks are due to Damien Thomson (Editor for Oncology) who carried out a heavy workload during the year. Every effort is made by the honorary editors to deal with manuscripts as expeditiously as possible and get a rapid decision back to the authors. The Journal has always had an outstanding review process and I would like to extend my own thanks and those of the Editorial Board to all of the reviewers mentioned in this issue. They give of their time generously and are often under some pressure to respond with a review as quickly as possible. The outstanding quality of the reviews we receive not only allows the editors to make an informed decision, but also often leads to suggestions which improve the manuscripts we publish. Blackwell Publishing, the publishers of the Journal, have provided a very good service over the last year as evidenced by the improved format of the Journal and their team has interacted very effectively with the editorial office. Finally, I would like to thank Virginia Savickis, the manager of the Journal, who is based in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians building in Sydney and who manages with good humour and great diligence the complex editorial processes of a journal which covers so many specialties. The Journal is an integral part of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and as such is one of the major ways in which the College contributes to the ongoing education of physicians. It is also one of the major routes by which the Royal Australasian College makes an active contribution to medical science worldwide. The Journal is well on the way to evolving into a major international journal of internal medicine and as it does so we will ensure that at least one of the world's great medical journals comes from the southern hemisphere. 2004 promises to be an even better year than 2003 and I would like to thank all readers for their support of the Journal." @default.
