- W2023157421 abstract "Incidence of certain specific ocular defects in a group of children with severe reading disabilities, mostly of a dyslexic type, was greatly in excess of that in a group of above-average readers, despite previous normal findings in routine visual tests (really sight tests). Individual defects and weighted combinations of defects effectively segregated the selected groups studied. Correlations of ocular measures with reading scores were positive and significant, but only low to moderate in magnitude. Thus, while prediction in the sense of classification of the groups was possible, only limited prediction of degree of reading achievement in the disability group was achieved. Among the orthoptic procedures used, that of determining the controlling eye in binocular vision was new in its method. Emphasis is given to this determination in assessing ocular contributions to reading problems. Predictive studies of unselected groups of younger children are necessary to validate the orthoptic measures and to refine predictive equations. There is strong clinical justification at this time for the inclusion of orthoptic procedures in the total diagnostic procedure employed on suspected cases of reading disabilities, especially since early remediation of visual defects may be essential to reading progress. In particular, change of the controlling eye to improve laterality problems is feasible." @default.
