- W2023158896 abstract "P-002 Introduction: Epidemiological studies indicate that ambient air pollution is associated with increased morbidity and mortality both short term and long term. Foetuses, as infants, are a population group with an special vulnerability to air pollution. Several outcomes have been related with exposure to air pollution during pregnancy, including low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation and preterm delivery. Here we present the protocol developed to assess exposure to air pollution in a birth cohort in Spain. Methods: Different groups, in six Spanish geographic areas (Menorca, Granada, Valencia, Sabadell, Asturias, and Basque Country) are carrying out birth cohort studies, all of them integrated in the INMA (Environment and Childhood) Collaborative Research Network. The aim of the project is to study the effects of the environment and diet on foetal and early childhood development. Nearly 3500 couples women-child will be followed up. The air pollutant exposure protocol consisted on: (1) Questionnaire in the third trimester of pregnancy to assess indoor exposure and its surroundings and pattern time-activity; (2) Biological samples: urine measurement of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OH-P); (3) Outdoor atmospheric measurements: nitrogen dioxide (NO2), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and ozone; particulate matter (PM10, PM2,5) and their composition (PAH); indoor and personal exposure: COV and NO2 in a women subset; and (4) Personal exposure modelling means of time-activity matrices and geographic information systems (GIS). Results: In December 2005 more than 2500 women have been recruited. Preliminary results for outdoor NO2 mean levels in Valencia were from 47.5 μg/m3 (city) to 13.7 μg/m3 (the rural area), from 51.8 (city) to 13.6 μg/m3 in Granada, and from 47.7 (traffic sites) to 29.5 μg/m3 (background sites) in Sabadell. Mean levels for PM2.5 and PM10 were, respectively, from 23.2 μg/m3 to 18.4 μg/m3 and from 40.4 μg/m3, 38.5 μg/m3 in Valencia; and in Sabadell in a urban background location 21,7 μg/m3 and 33,9 μg/m3, respectively. Indoor levels of NO2 in a subsample in Valencia (n: 90) ranged 2 to 149 μg/m3. Finally, the mean values for 1-OH-P in urine pilot study (n: 16) were 0.62 ng/ml, 0.94 ng/ml in smokers and 0.21 ng/ml in non-smokers (p:0.016). Discussion and Conclusions: Preliminary results suggest substantial variability to exposure to air pollution, being area of residence and life styles important determinants. This protocol and the type of study will allow obtaining an individual assessment of exposition to air pollution.
