- W2023175352 abstract "Introduction OF THE 9. MILLION DEATHS PER YEAR IN the United States, roughly 25% occur acutely, without terminal disease or brain damage. 1 These 500,000 people could reasonably be considered candidates for attempts at resuscitation. It is estimated that there are over 100,000 prehospital and emergency department attempts at resuscitation annually, and a similar number more within hospitals, though as we know, not all of these at tempts occur in such seemingly appropriate patients. Since the modern era of resuscitation began in the 1960s, thousands of lives have been saved. Yet it is clear, based on recent documentation of low rates of resuscitation and survival to discharge, that current techniques are not par t icular ly effect ive in restarting the heart. 2 Additionally, it is apparent to veterans of our profession that current methods of resuscitating the heart regularly result in a patient with a live heart and a severely damaged brain. Therefore, numerous investigators continue to search for technical, sys temat ic , and pharmaco log ic advances that will restore beating hearts and thinking braihs to victims of sudden death. Despite being introduced over 30 years ago, 3 the basic" @default.
