- W2023176898 abstract "Certain minds discover that for them one of the best ways to understand an important idea is to find fault with it-deep, basic fault if possible. Churchman's paper' is important enough to warrant this kind of searching criticism. The attempt to generalize upon the meaning of experimental inference is of course the first concern of the philosopher of science. And the effort made to show how statistical inference is or can be considered to be a special case of pragmatic inference, which in its turn can be subsumed under a very general theory of experimental inference (induction) is most thought-provoking. My own criticisms of the paper can be classified under the following heads: (1) Churchman's progress from statistical, through pragmatic, to truly inductive inference seems in this very paper to have led him to tumble down the spiral of science from inductive, through pragmatic, back to statistical inference. (2) Churchman's desperate efforts to evade a first starting point or for philosophy of science has resulted in his assuming the biggest first starting point or most inclusive absolute in methodology, namely, that there is absolutely no first starting point for scientific investigation, that is, absolutely no absolute. In other words, his treatment of the self-referring character of scientific activity (who shall investigate the investigator) flounders because of the refusal of logicians to solve logic's deepest paradox: the nature of selfreference. (3) Lastly, Churchman's ideals for humanity are set in the nineteenth century optimistic framework of progress. A mechanical conception of progress pervades the paper. What of the opposites of the ideals of longevity, health, freedom, well-being, etc. Is not a dialectical conception of progress needed?" @default.
