- W2023179895 abstract "The hypothesis was tested that low molecular weight inhibitors are made within cells of a lethal hybrid embryo prepared by fertilizing eggs of Rana pipiens with sperm of Rana sylvatica. Cell aggregates from the marginal zone of diploid pipiens gastrulae were treated in standard solution containing bisected hybrid gastrulae. The majority of cells failed to differentiate. Control aggregates exposed to medium containing bisected diploid pipiens gastrulae formed striated muscle, heart, pigment cells, and nerve. Aggregates made from embryos of the reciprocal cross (Rana sylvatica ♀ × Rana pipiens ♂) do not survive in culture any better than within the hybrid embryo. In this respect they resemble the hybrids made with Rana pipiens eggs by fertilization with Rana catesbeiana or Rana clamitans sperm. Using appearance of heart beat as the criterion for differentiation, the critical mass of hybrid (pipiens ♀ × sylvatica ♂) cells below which differentiation occurs in cell culture was found to lie somewhere between half the gastrula and the entire gastrula. When hybrid marginal zone cell aggregates, each consisting of approximately 125 cells, are fused to form a composite equivalent in mass to an intact hybrid gastrula, organized cell differentiation was not observed. The inhibitor hypothesis is discussed in the context of previous theories concerning the basis for the hybrid block to development." @default.
