• W2023239631 abstract "Abstract In this paper we study the possibility of detecting small time variations of the thickness of one or more layers in a layered earth section by a suitable modification of the conventional resistivity sounding method. To this end, after introducing the “thickness-effect” as a new layering parameter characterizing the amount of the thickness variation of a layer, we define the “apparent thickness-effect” as the most appropriate field parameter to evaluate the variation of the apparent resistivity function following the modification of the earth section in the time. A simple two-layer case is then studied in detail to put in evidence the shape and the amplitude of the apparent thickness-effect anomaly when represented against spacing for different resistivity ratios. As a possible and immediate application of the theoretical premises and principles, the real case of an unconfined coastal aquifer submitted to variation of the level of the groundwater table in response to tides, is investigated. Further considerations show that, with high precision measuring devices and in the absence of any noise and other sources of error, it would be possible to detect a thicknesseffect not less than 5 ·10 −4 which, for a resistivity ratio equal to 0.025, may correspond to the presence of water at a mean depth of 100 m from the ground surface with a tidal semi-excursion of 5 cm." @default.
