- W2023247768 abstract "In today's Lancet, Andrew Grulich and colleagues 1 Grulich AE van Leeuwen MT Falster MO Vajdic CM Incidence of cancers in people with HIV/AIDS compared with immunosuppressed transplant recipients: a meta-analysis. Lancet. 2007; 370: 59-67 Summary Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (1641) Google Scholar report that the 15 cancers we now know or suspect to have an infectious cause occur more often in people infected with HIV and in organ-transplant recipients. The scale of the HIV epidemic has provided much information on the consequences of immune deficiency, far surpassing our past knowledge on the topic. Indeed, Grulich was able to re-assess over 42 000 cancers in people with HIV, mostly from the USA, compared with about 3000 cancers in transplant recipients, mainly from Australia and Nordic countries. HIV—bridging the research gap in SydneyOn July 22–24, the 4th International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV/AIDS pathogenesis, treatment, and prevention will take place in Sydney, Australia. To coincide with the meeting, this issue of The Lancet contains articles describing advances in the knowledge, treatment, and prevention of HIV/AIDS. The meeting is expected to draw around 5000 delegates and has received a record number of abstracts (3200)—a 50% increase from IAS 2005 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Despite criticism over the years that IAS meetings lack scientific and clinical focus, this year promises to be different. Full-Text PDF Incidence of cancers in people with HIV/AIDS compared with immunosuppressed transplant recipients: a meta-analysisThe similarity of the pattern of increased risk of cancer in the two populations suggests that it is immune deficiency, rather than other risk factors for cancer, that is responsible for the increased risk. Infection-related cancer will probably become an increasingly important complication of long-term HIV infection. Full-Text PDF" @default.
