- W2023252310 abstract "Within the realm of Palaeozoic crinoid palaeontology, the Devonian is widely regarded as the ‘lost time interval’, being somewhat understudied in comparison to, for example, the Silurian or Mississippian. It is a lack of modern systematic treatment of the crinoids of the type Devonian that makes The British Devonian Crinoidea such an important work. I found the monograph to be unique in that; apart from its obvious scientific value, it was a pleasant and enjoyable read. It should find a place in the library of all crinoid palaeontologists. This is the first of two parts detailing the Devonian crinoids of Britain; part 1 considers the camerate crinoids. The systematic descriptions are good, including not only the descriptions and diagnoses of the authors but also the cited opinions of earlier authors. Furthermore, the monograph contains not only plates with recent photographs of the specimens but reproductions of many of the earlier drawings that accompanied original publications detailing the treated taxa. In this way, the monograph provides figures and descriptions until now only available in older, harder to obtain, literature. The systematic portions, which make up the majority of the book, are ripe with crinoid jargon and may be a difficult read for many. What makes this monograph superior, however, is that it has made an attempt not only to describe all known species of British Devonian crinoids but also does a great job of providing specific stratigraphic, locality and abundance data for these species. Furthermore, the authors clearly worked hard to determine the whereabouts of even the most obscure specimens deposited in various museums throughout the United Kingdom. It is this precise attention to detail that makes this work such an important contribution. In the modern era of database palaeontology, a comprehensive systematic work such as the British Devonian Crinoidea is of the utmost importance. This monograph provides the most up-to-date systematic opinions on all known crinoid taxa from the Devonian of the United Kingdom, and much appreciation should be paid to the Palaeontographical Society for continuing to publish and support research leading to monographs such as this. The power of such a monograph as a database is both unparalleled and underappreciated, and I urge that the data herein compiled be added to the Paleobiology Database sooner rather than later. The beginning of the monograph provides a detailed description of previous work on crinoids from the British Devonian, but it also provides interesting backstory on the 19th century scientists and collectors whose contributions made up the collections discussed in the monograph. Among these collectors are Henry Adrian Wyatt-Edgell, who already published papers prior to his death at the age of 19, and Arthur M. Champernowne, whose passion for fieldwork led to his death. It is, in part, because of this fun section on notable scientists and collectors that the monograph has a wider appeal beyond just those interested in Palaeozoic crinoids. The writing and style of this monograph also contain a more colloquial style than those of other similar texts, but this makes the monograph more readable than other comparable systematic works. The British Devonian Crinoidea is a necessary addition to the libraries of crinoid palaeontologists and has something to offer for collectors and enthusiasts in the history of British palaeontology. I thoroughly recommend it to students of echinoderm palaeontology." @default.
