Specimens were prepared from prealloyed iron-base powders containing 2, 4, 6, and 8 wt-%Cu, compacted to densities D of 6·4 and 6·8Mg m 3 and sintered for 1 h at 1120°C under a cracked ammonia atmosphere. After water quenching from solution treatment temperatures within the range 950-1100°C, the response to precipitation hardening at 525°C was followed by determination of hardness and radial crushing strength (RCS). Age hardening in steam rather than nitrogen increased the peak hardness of specimens containing 2%Cu but decreased the peak hardness of specimens containing 4, 6, and 8%Cu.
