- W2023296452 abstract "Since the discovery of streptomycin by Waksman 1 (in 1944) data have been obtained which show the value of this drug as an adjunct to the surgical treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. The demonstration that streptomycin had a beneficial effect on tuberculosis in the guinea pig by Feldman 2 and the report that this drug seemed to improve patients with pulmonary tuberculosis by Hinshaw 3 in 1946 have been followed by other studies concerning the value of streptomycin in pulmonary tuberculosis. The largest number of cases in which pulmonary tuberculosis treated with streptomycin was evaluated has been collected under the auspices of the Veterans Administration. 4 (Over 3,000 patients with various types of tuberculosis have been treated.) It was found that those patients in whom a beneficial effect was obtained showed clinical response within the first two weeks of therapy. Approximately 60 per cent became afebrile after the administration of streptomycin." @default.
