- W2023303610 abstract "The Adolescent Fertility Survey covering 6 districts of Uganda (Jinja Kampala Masaka Kabale Hoima and Mbale) was conducted between 1988 and 1990. A probability sample of households was selected from rural subparishes and urban administrative divisions and 4510 participants (594 males and 1009 females from rural areas and 951 males and 1956 females from urban areas) aged 15-24 were chosen on the basis of age regardless of marital status. Approximately 82% of the males and 80% of the females had had a sexual partner in the last 3 years. Two-thirds of the males had had more than one sexual partner; more than half of these had had 4 or more partners. Most young women had had only one sexual partner; only one-third had had more than one partner. 79% of urban males and 82% of urban females used no contraception vs. 92 and 97% of rural respondents respectively. Condom use was reported among 18% of urban males and 5% of rural males; less than 1% of females in both areas reported condom use. 12% of urban females used oral contraceptives; 5% of urban females 2% of urban males and 2% of all rural respondents used methods other than oral contraceptives and the condom. Most respondents agreed that using a condom helps prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). 21% of males and 8% of females said they had contracted an STD: 23% of urban males and 9% of urban females as opposed to 19% of rural males and 6% of rural females. About 8% of urban and 7% of the rural respondents with one sexual partner in the 3 years before the survey had had STD compared with approximately 40% of those in urban and 27% in rural areas with 4 or more partners. In Uganda sex education offered in the school system may be inappropriate to meet the needs of the adolescents and young adults. The establishment of health clinics for young adults that would combine sexuality education STD treatment and family planning services is recommended." @default.
