- W2023317814 abstract "Pituitary and plasma levels of avian luteinizing hormone (IRLH) were measured by radioimmunoassay in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) whose reproductive condition was photoperiodically manipulated. In young birds of both sexes subjected to long (20L/4D) daylengths for the first time, plasma IRLH increased within 4 days from a basal level of 3–5 ng/ml to a value some 8-fold greater; thereafter the levels remained relatively constant for a further 30 days. While in young birds plasma levels generally did not increase until the end of the second long photoperiod, older individuals, which had undergone a reproductive cycle, showed a significant increase in circulating levels of the gonadotropin when reexposed to a single long photoperiod. In birds which had not previously experienced long daylengths, gonadal growth was detectable after 3 long days and continued for 21–28 days before full development was attained. Over this same period, total pituitary IRLH increased approximately 5-fold. When sexually mature male quail were subjected to a nonstimulatory (8L/16D) light regime plasma IRLH levels remained high for 8–16 days, falling thereafter to levels characteristic of short-day birds. Total pituitary IRLH rose significantly during the first 8 days of such treatment and then decreased toward short-day values. Testicular weight was maintained while plasma levels of IRLH remained high but regression began immediately the plasma titer fell significantly. Ultrastructurally, the first response of the regressing testis was an accumulation of lipid droplets within the Leydig cells." @default.
