- W2023335996 abstract "The influences of breed (Salers, a hardy breed; Friesian, a dairy breed) and rearing conditions (mothered; non-mothered) on the mother-young relationship have been studied. The mothered animals were observed with their dams. During the first lactation, all the experimental animals were observed just after calving, during the first 2 months after calving and when the calves were between 10 and 14 months of age. During the second lactation, animals were also observed when in a double-suckling system. All observations were done when the animals were at pasture. During the winter period, animals were in loose stables for the first three winters and cows were tethered during the fourth one. Rearing conditions did not have a great influence on cow behaviour at calving. From 2 weeks to 2 months, mothered cows licked their calves for longer and suckled for longer than isolated ones. They appeared more “maternal” than the non-mothered cows. Breed had a major effect on cow-calf relationships: Salers calves sucked longer and were licked for longer than Friesian calves. Salers cows had more social interactions with all other animals than Friesians. Friesians were sucked more by alien calves than were Salers. The implications for double-suckling and rearing management are discussed." @default.
