- W2023343274 abstract "A layer of mucus lines the surface of the airways from the respiratory bronchioles to the larynx. Recent evidence indicates that this layer is discontinuous in nature and that many areas of mucosa are not covered with mucus particularly as the airways become smaller. 1 Van As A Webster I The morphology of mucus in mammalian pulmonary airways. Environ Res. 1974; 7: 1-12 Crossref Scopus (29) Google Scholar Mucus is normally transported cephalad by ciliary action of the respiratory epithelium to be swallowed or expectorated, an activity which serves to eliminate trapped inhaled foreign material and debris from the lung. The rate of mucous clearance in normal and diseased man and the factors affecting it are basic to the understanding of many disease processes of the lung. Several methods have been used to estimate mucociliary transport in intact animals and humans. These include measuring 1) the disappearance rate from the lungs by serial roentgenograms of insufflated radiopaque dusts such as bismuth subcarbonate, lead glass, and tantalum; 2 Barclay AE Franklin KJ MacBeth RG Roentgenographic studies of the excretions of dusts from the lungs. Am Rev Respir Dis. 1973; 107: 214-224 PubMed Google Scholar 2) the clearance of inhaled radioactive aerosols from the lungs by external scanning devices; 4 Camner P Philipson R Firberg L et al. Human tracheobronchial clearance studies. J Appl Physiol. 1973; 23: 495-499 Google Scholar and 5) the movement of radiopaque Teflon discs within the trachea by using a fluoroscopic image intensifier and videotaping the image of the trachea and the discs. 8 Friedman M Stott FD Poole DO et al. A new roentgenographic method for estimating mucous velocity in airways. Am Rev Respir Dis. 1977; 115: 67-72 PubMed Google Scholar This review will deal with mucociliary transport in obstructive lung disease, as estimated by the aforementioned methods, and its modification by drugs whose major site of action is on the airways." @default.
