- W2023350368 abstract "Abstract Research activity and extension work have contributed greatly to the dramatic increase in agricultural production in the United States. Because of the inelastic nature of demand and supply relationships for farm produce, a large part of the benefit from increased agricultural production accrues to consumers rather than to producers. In the United States individual states have a major responsibility for research and extension in agriculture and yet the individual state may capture only a portion of the benefits, since the benefits to consumers may be outside, as well as inside, state confines. This paper deals with the financing of agricultural research and extension (R & E) by federal and state governments in the United States in the light of the regional spillover benefits from R & E. The study indicates that spillover benefits from R & E from one region to another are quite considerable and suggests that increased emphasis should be put on federal support for R & E investment since this would provide more equitable use of such funds." @default.
