- W2023353518 abstract "Significant differences in body weight and thyroid activity as measured by cell height, per cent colloid and radioiodine uptake have been shown to occur during early growth and development in two subspecies of deermice ( Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii and P. m. gracilis ). It has been found that no significant difference exists in body weight and thyroid activity in the two subspecies at birth. However, at 70 days of age, gracilis is significantly heavier with a mean body weight of 17.6 gm in the summer and 18.8 gm in the winter, whereas bairdii shows a mean body weight of 15.8 gm in the summer and 16.6 gm in winter. In the summer, the thyroid gland of bairdii was found to contain 59% colloid with a cell height of 4.36 μ and an I 131 uptake of 2.8% as compared with 91% colloid, a cell height of 2.5 μ and an I 131 uptake of 0.73% in gracilis . In the winter, the thyroid gland of bairdii was found to contain 37% colloid with a cell height of 7.2 μ and an I 131 uptake of 5.2% as compared with 79% colloid, cell height of 5.1 μ and an I 131 uptake of 1.7% in gracilis . In general the conclusion was reached that although gracilis is the significantly larger of the two subspecies, it is bairdii which shows greater thyroid activity during early growth in both winter and summer." @default.
