- W2023368677 abstract "Abstract INTRODUCTION NITRATE and/or nitrite toxicity or poisoning has been the subject of extensive studies over the years. Numerous articles have appeared with information on reduction of nitrate to nitrite by micro-organisms and higher plants, Kurup and Vaidyanathan (1964). Conversion of nitrate to nitrite has, also, been reported in whole herbage, Jones and Griffith (1965). Perhaps the earliest recorded account of nitrate toxicity in animals was made by Mayo (1895) when he reported high mortality in range cattle fed corn stalks. Some forty years later Bradley et al. (1942) encountered similar problems when they fed oat hay to calves. It has now been established that these conditions only occur on the range when there is a large amount of nitrate present in the soil or when some other factors interfere with the normal processes of the plant. Experimental results of recent years have produced evidence of retarded growth in cattle, Weichenthal . . ." @default.
