• W2023379679 abstract "0775 PURPOSE: The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System introduced a new physical activity module (BRFSS PA module) in 2001, including 3 questions to assess global walking (i.e., walking for work, recreation, transportation, or any other reason). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and concurrent validity of the walking questions. METHODS: Two validation studies of the BRFSS PA module were conducted using activity logs and multiple administrations of the PA module. Study 1 (n = 92) was conducted in 1998–1999. Participants answered the survey 4 times (twice in-person and twice by telephone) and completed an activity log for 3 weeks. Study 2 (n = 60) was conducted in 2000–2001; participants answered the survey 3 times by telephone and completed an activity log for 1 week. Recommended walking was defined as walking for 5 days a week, 30 minutes or more. Concurrent validity between the log and surveys and test-retest reliability of multiple survey administrations were evaluated by Kappa statistics. RESULTS: Both study populations were 50% female, 80% white with a mean age of 45 years. In Study 1, 29% reported recommended walking on the BRFSS survey and 50% reported recommended walking on the log, concurrent validity kappa = 0.07. Reliability from in-person survey administrations was k = 0.42, and telephone reliability was k = 0.61. In Study 2, 48% reported recommended walking on the BRFSS survey and 38% reported recommended walking on the log (k = .19). Reliability from survey 1 to survey 2 was good, k = 0.56. CONCLUSIONS: The reliability of the walking questions on the BRFSS is fair to good (k = 0.4 to 0.6); however, the concurrent validity of these questions is poor (K<0.2). More research is needed to improve PA surveillance techniques to accurately assess a complete picture of physical activity.
