Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is common in the elderly. Because many patients are asymptomatic, this process is often underdiagnosed and undertreated, which has serious consequences since PAD is associated with increased mortality. Measurement of the ankle-arm index is especially useful as it allows early diagnosis of PAD. The treatment of PAD should include both appropriate antiplatelet therapy and control of risk factors, as well as management of the symptoms of PAD. The present article reviews current evidence on PAD in the elderly, including epidemiological data, diagnosis and treatment." @default.
