- W2023402423 abstract "N 30 July 1837, the American ship Morrison steamed into Uraga Bay O ) from Macao under the stewardship of an American merchant, Charles W. King, 1809-1867. In an attempt to establish contact, King had agreed to the plan of returning seven Japanese shipwrecked sailors as a means of opening the country to trade and missionaries. The enterprise came to nothing, for the day after the ship's arrival the shore batteries opened fire and forced the Morrison to retire. One month later, after receiving the same hostile reception at Kagoshima, King and the Morrison returned to Macao.' The failure of the mission postponed any further attempts to make contact until Commodore Matthew Perry succeeded in negotiating with the Japanese in 1853 and 1854, and Townsend Harris completed the task by pressing Japan into the trade agreements of 1858. For one Japanese, however, the Morrison Affair (as opposed to the Morrison Affair) that would take place a year later, had nothing to do with King or expatriate seamen. In January 1838, under ironic circumstances, Watanabe (Noboru) Kazan A () u, 1793-1841, an elder of the Tawara BiJ domain, prominent Edo artist and cultural figure, and a man possessed with insatiable curiosity about the West, hurriedly assembled his thoughts about Japan and the situation in the West. His essay, titled Shinkiron j ('Arguments for Restraint in Critical Times'), was an appeal to the bakufu not to carry out a rumored decision to open fire on the Morrison, and expressed doubts that sakoku policy was effective any longer. Written in a moment of passion, it led to Kazan's arrest," @default.
