• W2023443327 abstract "The surface tension behavior of aqueous sodium myristate solutions shows certain peculiar and interesting features that were observed previously only with biphasic dispersions of lipids or lipids and proteins. In the range from 25 to 37°C, the equilibrium tension is as low as 18 mN m−1 at high concentrations. The concentration dependence differs from that of other solutions, possibly reflecting the non-binary nature of the solution due to hydrolysis to the acid form. For a frequency or rate of area pulsation of ν=20–80 cycle min−1 and area amplitude of 1.9 in a pulsating bubble surfactometer, the dynamic surface tension at minimum area can be well below 10 mN m−1, and as low as 1 mN m−1 for concentrations ranging from 2 to 6 mM. These low tensions can be achieved only when the net rates of tension equilibration are neither too fast nor too slow compared with the rate of the area oscillation. The lowest tension minima, γmin, are observed for dimensionless frequencies νt95 varying from about 10 to 150, where t95 is the time that it takes to reach 95% of the equilibrium surface pressure at constant area. These results may be useful in understanding the behavior of certain lung surfactant formulations, and possibly relevant to foaming and coating processes." @default.
