- W2023444791 abstract "Opioid analgesia, particularly for severe acute pain and cancer pain, has long been considered appropriate treatment. However, empirical findings and the lack of an established evidence-basis for their long-term efficacy have led to a growing appreciation for the limitations of opioids for chronic pain. And yet, there is virtually unanimous agreement that some people do benefit from opioid therapy, as Drs. Peppin and Franklin each state in their opposing opinions. The issue is determining who will benefit, and while there are negative prognostic indicators—such as psychiatric comorbidities ⇓, histories of substance abuse ⇓, tobacco use ⇓, and being male ⇓—others factors merit consideration.
