- W2023454310 abstract "1564 PURPOSE: Racing Alaskan sled dogs have previously been shown to develop exercise-induced airway inflammation, with a cytological profile similar to that reported for elite human athletes participating in cold-weather sports. A recent study also showed that the airway inflammation in sled dogs persists through their summer resting period. Such inflammation is accompanied by airway hyperresponsiveness in humans, but airway function in sled dogs has not been measured. The purpose of this study was to determine pulmonary mechanical properties in trained, rested Alaskan sled dogs, and compare these values to typical laboratory hounds. METHODS: Nineteen healthy adult Alaskan sled dogs were compared to 5 healthy adult mixed breed laboratory hounds. All dogs were rested for at least 4 months prior to examination. Pulmonary mechanical properties were measured while the dogs were anesthetized with propofol and ventilated with a piston ventilator to maintain normocapnia. The mean pulmonary resistance and compliance measurements for 20 consecutive breaths were used as baseline values immediately prior to measurement of pulmonary reactivity. Pulmonary reactivity was tested using a single, 15 s burst of histamine aerosol (5 mg/ml), and expressed as the percentage change in baseline pulmonary resistance and compliance (mean of 20 consecutive breaths immediately after the administration of aerosol histamine). RESULTS: Alaskan sled dogs had greater decreases in pulmonary compliance following a single dose of aerosol histamine (77.47 ± 8.58 % baseline), compared to laboratory dogs (87.60 ± 9.22 % baseline). There was no significant difference in the response of pulmonary resistance to aerosol histamine. CONCLUSIONS: Despite having 4 months rest, racing Alaskan sled dogs have persistent airway dysfunction typical of exercise-induced asthma. These findings suggest that repeated exercise in cold conditions can lead to airway disease that does not readily resolve with cessation of exercise.
