- W2023490858 abstract "Abstract The parasitic amebae contain 10–16 mg of lipid/ml of packed cells. Phospholipid amounts to 60–70% of the total lipid. The fatty acid compositions of total lipids, neutral lipids, and phospholipids were determined by gas-liquid chromatography. The predominant fatty acid of the amebae was palmitic acid. Others were lauric, myristic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and nervonic acids. Two long-chain saturated fatty acids of undetermined structure were also present. The phospholipids of amebae contained ethanolamine, serine, choline, inositol, sphingosine, and amino compounds of undetermined structure. Cholesterol was the major component of the nonsaponiflable fraction of amebal lipid. Growth of amebae in the presence of labelled glucose indicated that only about 10% of the lipid carbon was derived from glucose. The major portion of the label in the lipids was found in the fatty acid fraction. Lipids examined were from two typical strains of Entamoeba histolytica, an atypical strain of this species, and E. invadens. The lipids of two components of the medium, horse serum and Bacteroides symbiosus, were studied for comparative purposes." @default.
