- W2023505873 abstract "ABSTRACT A method for detection of absorbing objects embedded in scattering media is described. In a confocal imagingarrangement the sample is illuminated with light modulated in polarization. The modulated part of the trans-mitted light is detected with lock-in-technique. Under the condition that the scattering particles are smallerthan the wavelength, this method is able to supply images with higher resolution and contrast than conventional transilluzmination. 1 INTRODUCTION Transillumination or diaphanography is a method for detection of absorbing objects embedded in scatteringmedia. In this technique a sample is illuminated with visible or near infrared light, and the transmitted light ismeasured at different positions of the object. These diaphanograms contain informations on position and size ofthe object. As early as 1929 this technique had been already used by M.Cutler1 for diagnosis of breast lesions.Since tissue is strongly scattering, diaphanography provides only images of poor contrast and low resolution. Therefore it is subject of present research to modify the conventional transillumination to obtain diaphanogramsof higher optical quality. Examples of this efforts are time- and spatially resolved methods.28 In addition itwas suggested to use the polarization characteristics of transmitted light for the detection of hidden objects. Inreference [9] circularly polarized light was used experimentally. In this paper we report an experimental set-up,which allows to improve the quality of diaphanograms by modulation of linearly polarized light. The measuringtechnique employs a setup commonly used for polarization modulated ellipsometry.10Recently, we studied the attenuation of the transmission of scattering media without an absorbing object.11 Inthese experiments we used suspensions of standard-dow-latex spheres of different sizes or Intralipid-1O%. Weobserved, that for scatterers with a diameter much smaller than the wavelength, the scattered light is unpolarizedwithin limits of measurement. Only the unscattered light preserves the plane of polarization. As a consequence" @default.
