The hypopharyngeal organs, below the mouth, are sensory organs consisting of 50 sensilla and are probably contact chemoreceptors. The cell bodies of 5 bipolar sensory cells are founded in the basal region of each sensillum; these cell bodies, the axons and the dendritic bases are ensheathed by glial cells. The distal segment of the peripheral prolongations are protected by a canal which opens to the outside by a cuticular aperture. From the base to the apex of a sensillum, three accessory cells successively surround the sensory cells and the canal: they are: (a) the trichogen cell surrounding the cell bodies, the proximal segments and the ciliary segments of the peripheral prolongations, (b) the proximal tormogen cell surrounding the base of the canal; (c) the distal tormogen cell surrounding the “vacuole” traversed by the canal. The canal receptacle is an extracellular space, lined by the plasmatic membrane of the trichogen cell and into which the canal opens. The canal receptacle is not in communication with the vacuole. The trichogen cell probably secretes the material which bathes the distal segment and the receptive surfaces. One of the 5 sensory cells is morphologically different from the others. A particular intercellular junction is developed between two proximal segments of the peripheral prolongations. The basal portion of the sensillum is packed into a cellular glial sheath and a connective tissue membrane. The superficial region is surrounded by epidermal cells with large microtubular bundles." @default.
