- W2023532832 abstract "Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) has proved to be a powerful technique for the study of clusters of paramagnetic transition-metal ions.1 Compounds of the type A3M2X9 (A = Rb, Cs; M = Ti, Cr; X = Cl, Br) crystallize in the hexagonal system and contain discrete dimeric clusters of M3+.2 The magnetic and optical-spectroscopic properties of Cs3Cr2Cl9 have been interpreted in terms of noninteracting Cr2Cl93− dimers.3,4 Evidence for interdimer exchange, in addition to the dominant antiferromagnetic intradimer coupling, down to 1.8 K is provided by INS experiments. Splitting of ’’dimer transitions’’ is observed as well as energy dispersion along (001) and deviations of the observed wave-vector-dependent intensities from those calculated for molecular dimer excitations. In contrast to bulk techniques INS provides an ideal means to study the interplay of intra- and interdimer exchange. Compounds of the type A3M2X9 serve as well defined model systems for condensed magnetic materials as well as for spin glasses. 1A. Furrer and H. U. Güdel, J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 14, 256 (1979). 2G. J.
