- W2023532981 abstract "Pediatric obesity has been labeled an epidemic in various parts of the world, rising in prevalence, and associated with serious medical repercussions. How is obesity in youth defined and measured? What factors are associated with its recent increase in prevalence? What are its medical and psychosocial consequences? How can it be prevented and treated? These are some of the questions addressed in Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence. The editors, Wieland Kiess, Claude Marcus, and Martin Wabitsch, have assembled experts from Europe and the United States to write concise yet thorough chapters for this well-written and highly useful book. The book has been divided into chapters covering very specific topics, particularly regarding the causes of obesity in youth, and its various medical comorbidities. For example, there are separate chapters on epidemiological, physiological, genetic, environmental, nutritional, and physical activity factors contributing to the rising prevalence of pediatric obesity. There are specific reviews covering the impact of obesity on children’s psychological functioning, musculoskeletal health, lipids/lipoproteins, coronary heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (two chapters), and overall problems in adulthood. The authors have been well selected, and their expertise allows them to address each specified subject thoroughly, explaining the most current evidence, explaining the issues with designing and interpreting research in the given area, and writing their summaries clearly and at a level where a nonexpert can understand. The book is full of useful tables and figures that contribute to the book’s utility in being both concise and comprehensive. The team of contributors is multinational, and the book benefits with a more broad-based, global perspective than is typically seen-covering at least European and American research, and often data from non-Western countries as well. Yet, the authors write in remarkably fluent English. Each chapter is written to serve as a stand-alone review of its particular topic. This is mostly a positive feature of the book, as one does not, for example, need to read the chapter on definition of pediatric obesity in order to understand later chapters. Where relevant, each chapter begins with a minor introduction to why the particular topic is important, and most chapters end with a brief summary. The introductions include some repetition across chapters; for example, several chapters begin with an overview of the definition, prevalence, and consequences of pediatric obesity. However, most readers will find this useful rather than bothersome, as they will likely select just the chapters that are of particular interest, rather than reading the book cover to cover. One trade-off of the stand-alone nature of the chapters is that no chapter refers to another. In addition, the chapters differ in their viewpoint and summary of some topics, including even the definition of obesity in youth (this stemming from a lack of international standard definition; in fact, the book starts off by acknowledging that the definition and diagnosis are controversial), but also including its comorbidities and treatment. Yet, these slightly differing accounts of various topics allow the reader to get broad perspectives, rather than one author deferring to another. Through these diverse perspectives and the overall expertise of the contributors, the book also succeeds in delineating many areas within the field that are in dire need of future studies, as well as the challenges in designing and implementing these studies. The book also provides clinical guidelines to practitioners, such as special issues in doing medical examinations with obese youth, and an overview of a multidisciplinary approach to treating them. There is also a very clear summary of the health economics of pediatric obesity, the limitations of our knowledge in this area, and the related factors that limit families from receiving treatment for their obese children. In summary, the book’s individual chapters provide clear, thorough, yet concise and highly readable summaries of the literature in their designated topics. Collectively, these chapters delineate a research agenda for the field and issues we grapple with at a community and societal level (eg, the ever-increasing availability of nonnutritious, high-calorie foods), while also providing clinicians with practical information on medical and psychological complications to look for, and strategies for intervention, when working with obese youth and their families. This excellent book will be useful to readers within and outside the field of bariatric medicine. Bottom Line: A valuable resource with brief yet thorough summaries, and useful practical information." @default.
