- W2023589505 abstract "Efforts to raise academic standards in two districts' high schools are described and examined for their moral underpinnings. Using Durkheim's notion of morality, the authors argue that recent school reform efforts, such as testing, tighter discipline and attendance codes, and increased supervision of teachers serve primarily to solve organizational problems occasioned by schools' increased size, racial integration, and bureaucratization. The moral elements implicit in the reforms were those that served primarily organizational ends of integration, differentiation, and intelligibility. Accompanying the schools' reform efforts was a greater emphasis on a particular version of the world for which students are being prepared. From the schools' view, the moral elements of that world are individuality, secularity, and competitiveness. This version of reality paralleled and strengthened school reform efforts. The authors also describe notions of morality ignored by the organization and its reforms but stressed and exemplified by teachers who have their own notions of right conduct and project their own versions of the real world for which they are preparing students." @default.
