- W2023632037 abstract "New vaccines and improved vaccination programs have been developed during the last few years. This review focuses on advances in four vaccines in large scale use: pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type b, polio, and measles vaccines. Although new acellular vaccines will certainly be accepted to general vaccination schedules (at first for booster vaccinations), we should, during the next few years, continue using traditional whole cell vaccines. Conjugate vaccines against H. influenzae type b infections have proven safe and efficacious, and may even have an effect on mucosal infections in addition to the invasive ones. Campaigns to prevent poliomyelitis are proceeding well, and eradication of the disease can be predicted. However, good programs can perhaps still be improved: combination of the use of inactivated and live poliovirus vaccines seems to be the most efficacious way to induce protective antibodies. With measles, the current problem is low coverage in some populations. To conquer these obstacles, medical, psychologic, and social means should be used." @default.
