- W2023643553 abstract "A computer-based method is described for the determination of the interfacial tension between pendant and sessile drops in a surrounding continuous phase. This has been used to determine the effect on interfacial tension of increasing amounts of aliphatic alcohols, from methanol up to n-octanol, equilibrated between a hydrocarbon solvent (Shellsol) and water. The results indicated large decreases in interfacial tension, with n-butanol, followed by n-propanol giving the greatest reduction. Measurements were also made of the rate of change of interfacial tension during the mass transfer of 2.5% of the alcohols between phases. Changes were observed for all alcohols from ethanol to n-pentanol, the effect being greatest for transfer into water drops and out of solvent drops. Application of the linear stability theory of Sorensen to these results failed to predict the observed instability for transfer into solvent drops.On decrit une methode sur ordinateur pour la determination de la tension superficielle entre des gouttes suspendues et sessiles dans une phase continue environnante. On a employe cette methode pour determiner l'effet sur la tension superficielle de quantites accrues d'alcools aliphatiques, depuis le methanol jusqu'au n-octanol, equilibres entre un solvant aux hydrocarbures (Shellsol) et de l'eau. Les resultats indiquent d'importantes diminutions de la tension superficielle, la plus forte reduction etant obtenue avec le n-butanol, suivi du n-propanol. On a egalement pris des mesures de taux de changement de la tension superficielle lors du transfert de matiere de 2,5% des alcools entre les phases. Des changements ont ete observes pour tous les alcools, depuis l'ethanol jusqu'au n'pentanol, l'effet etant le plus marque pour le transfert dans les gouttes d'eau et hors des gouttes de solvant. L'application de la theorie de la stabilite lineaire de Sorensen a ces resultats n'a pas permis de predire l'instabilite observee pour le transfert dans les gouttes de solvant." @default.
