- W2023663214 abstract "Abstract There are indications that suggestion and hypnosis also occur in primitive society, and are similar to Occidental phenomena of suggestion and hypnosis. An analysis of the cultural context and meaning of such data indicates that socio-cultural factors, usually related to supernaturalistic attitudes and practices, greatly enhance the hypnotizability of the primitive, by increasing the prestige (“power”) of the hypnotist, who is usually a magician. This finding implies that, when he seeks to induce a state of hypnosis, the effectiveness of the primitive hypnotist's technical competence is appreciably enhanced by the fact that hypnotic powers are imputed to him by his society as a whole. In fact, it is possible to demonstrate that, in some instances, the group as a whole acts as the hypnotist, while in other instances social expectations facilitate the appearance of trance states in hermits or in people who temporarily withdraw from the group while questing for a vision (Benedict, 1923). Psychodynamics and methodology are also discussed and suggest that an analysis of primitive cultural data may shed new light upon psychological phenomena in our own society." @default.
