- W2023684515 abstract "Shortly after moulting to the 5th instar, larvae of Calpodes ethlius Stoll (Lepidoptera, Hesperiidae) secrete wax in the form of cylinders 12μ in diameter through two patches of modified integument. This event can be considered as one of the last syntheses undertaken by the epidermis at the 4th–5th moult which has been prolonged into the intermoult of the 5th instar. The rate of synthesis of the wax cylinders has been determined by measuring the length secreted per hour. This intermoult wax secretion is not a triggered event but is under the continuous control of a hormone from the head. Experiments involving head and thoracic ligatures, the surgical removal of the brain, corpus cardiacum, corpus allatum, sub-oesophageal ganglion, and the 1st thoracic ganglion show that the normal rate of wax secretion depends upon the integrity of the corpus allatum/corpus cardiacum. Alone they are insufficient. Implantations of the brain and corpus allatum/corpus cardiacum into isolated abdomens do not induce wax secretion; conversely, although wax secretion can be considered as the last event of the moult cycle it is not controlled only by the prothoracic glands. Larvae without the brain and corpus allatum/corpus cardiacum are unable to secrete wax in the 5th instar although they pupate normally." @default.
