- W2023693872 abstract "Normally it would seem quite absurd for a book that is basically poetry to be reviewed by someone whose field in basically music in a periodical devoted basically to dance. But when the author of such a book happens to be John Cage, it somehow makes sense. Both in training and in practice, Cage is primarily a composer, and it is generally musicians who have followed his career most avidly and read his scores most carefully. Yet Cage never hesitated to cross the usual musical boundaries when he felt like composing lectures, manipulating words, making theatrical statements, writing anecdotes, or creating graphic art. And his work raises questions so basic and so unprecedented that practitioners in all the arts are obliged to consider his ideas, and then to reconsider them every few years. Of all Cage's books, it is perhaps the first one, Silence, that has had the broadest impact. Even now, almost twenty years after its publication, artists of all sorts continue to respond to its Zen principles, its chance procedures, and its revolutionary ideas about sound, silence, form, and time. Cage's subsequent books have not repeated these themes, which constitute his most fundamental and radical ideas, but have moved on. A Year from Monday developed many of Cage's political principles and moved into anecdotes and autobiographical notes. M developed those themes and moved into vivid graphic images and Cage's personal poetic form, the mesostic." @default.
