- W2023705470 abstract "The relation between the common polychaete species Nereis diversicolor and Arenicola marina was studied. Nereis and juvenile Arenicola with a body length of 1.5 to 3 cm, were kept in various densities in sediment filled containers in the laboratory. Survival and growth of the animals in “fed” and “non-fed” conditions were determined. Survival of juvenile Arenicola was found to be positively related with initial length and condition of the animals and with the availability of dead organic material as food and negatively related with the number of Nereis present. Growth in Arenicola was depressed or absent in cases of food shortage, and in the presence of Nereis; effects were most serious when both factors go together. Within certain limits the growth rate of Arenicola declines with increasing Arenicola-Nereis ratios. In the non-fed condition the mean weight of Nereis increased with a proportional decrease of the Arenicola numbers. It was observed that Nereis intrudes into the Arenicola burrow and settles in the upper part. In this way Nereis competes for living space and causes hindrance. Contact between individuals of both species commonly results in interactions. Particularly with a dense Nereis populations and scarcity of food, Nereis predates on tail ends of Arenicola or even kills its victim which may cause a severe reduction of the juvenile Arenicola population, especially in nurseries." @default.
