- W2023732088 abstract "Continental weathering and erosion are discussed from a planetary perspective, as important links in the chain of chemical and physical exchanges between surface geospheres (atmosphere-hydrosphere-crust) and the mantle. The influence of weathering on geosphere chemistry is explored by considering potassium exchanges between geospheres. K is transferred from the continents by weathering and erosion to the oceans, from which dissolved K is removed during spilitization and by incorporation into sediments. K carried to the mantle by subduction of spilites and sediments (8 × 1013 g a−1) could balance the dissolved K added to the oceans from continental river runoff and from seafloor hydrothermal springs. The largest K flux is that (2.7 × 1014 g a−1) physically carried to the oceans in suspended sediments. The weakest link in quantifying geosphere exchanges is the lack of understanding of the construction and restoration of continents and hence in defining the parameters involved in their chemical and physical renewal." @default.
