- W2023752245 abstract "Calcification of the aorta is generally interpreted as part of the ageing process, and usually little attention is paid to this finding. It should, however, be realised that its location in the different segments of the aorta may be of clinical and diagnostic significance. Calcification of the aortic knob is a common finding on chest X-rays of elderly individuals and is probably the result of local stress and strain. The descending portion of the thoracic aorta is less frequently involved, except in severe atherosclerosis. The earliest and most extensive atheromatous lesions are found in the abdominal aorta, and the radiological demonstration of calcified plaques in this segment often signifies generalised arteriosclerosis. In recent years attention has been focused on calcification of the intima of the ascending aorta, as a valuable sign of syphilitic aortitis. The aortic root and arch which are singularly rich in lymph supply are one of the main targets for the spirochaetes which lodge in the perivascular lymphatics. Clinical and radiological signs may be lacking in uncomplicated syphilitic aortitis and even the serological tests may be negative. In these cases the radiological demonstration of calcification of the intima of the ascending aorta may give the clue to the correct diagnosis. It may also be helpful in cases of aortic incompetence in which the aetiology is still in doubt (Fig. 1). Jackman and Lubert (1945) drew attention to this radiological sign." @default.
