The working-section wall temperature and the gas temperature were equal, 357–857°C. Several distinct regimes of behaviour have been identified and correlations have been developed for predicting rates of mass-loss. The controlling dimensionless parameters are the Fourier, Biot, and second Damkohler ratios. There is an initial period during which a stick appears to behave, as expected in the limit t → 0, as if it were semi-infinite. This is followed at the higher temperatures, typically above 500°C, by a regime in which heterogeneous combustion at the surface and heat conduction inside drive a pyrolysis front. At lower temperatures heterogeneous combustion is unimportant or absent and rate is controlled by a combinaton of pyrolysis kinetics and heat transfer. A value of the energy of activation for pyrolysis of 120 kJ/mol is suggested by the results." @default.
