- W2023773277 abstract "The problem of the arts as a value in our society has always been basically this: how does the aesthetic creator fare in comparison with creators in other fields of human experience, such as theology, politics, science, communications, or business? Does the painter, poet, or composer have a comparably favorable situation in respect to training, career opportunities, status, economic maintenance, and general acceptance of his contribution? Do the controls and freedoms which every creative pursuit needs either from within or outside of the immediate system --allow the aesthetic creator to perform his function in the manner in which he and his fellow artists think it should be performed? What, indeed, is his function, especially in this period? Since these questions imply a comparison of aesthetic with other forms of human experience, I wish to make my position explicit. 1. The aesthetic domain of life, like the theologic and the scientific, is demonstrably and objectively related to the whole network of social, technical, political, and economic processes of a society and, most fundamentally, to the systems of values which are presupposed by all human activities. This is illustrated by materials used in the constructions of artists, in the distribution of their works, the composition of their audiences or publics, copyright laws, and the whole range of institutional arrangements involved with the arts. 2.
