- W2023798990 abstract "Direct determination of allowed continuous symmetry-breaking transitions among crystallographic space groups is systematized by using the decomposition theorem of Hermann, according to which every subgroup of a space group is a class-equivalent (Klassengleich) subgroup of a translation-equivalent (Zellengleich) subgroup of the parent group. The theorem provides a structure in the lattice of maximal space subgroups of a parent space group needed for studies of phase transitions between a space group and its space subgroups. With the use of this structure, a systematic application of the chain-subduction criterion is facilitated. The direct group-theory procedures are illustrated by obtaining all allowed continuous transitions from the parent space group ${C}_{4h}^{6}$ to any of its space subgroups. Results agree with Lyubarskii's (1960) calculation except in one case where agreement can be obtained by extending Lyubarskii's analysis to include terms of higher (eighth) degree in the Landau free energy." @default.
