- W2023806695 abstract "The recovered memory debate has created much secular and academic interest and has inspired a great deal of speculation and research into the nature of traumatic memories. Following the work of a number of traumatologists, the present paper argues that traumatic memories are processed differently in human memory than are non-traumatic memories. Specifically, traumatic memories are encoded as implicit memories, which are outside volitional control, rather than as explicit memories or memories relying on conscious awareness, which is how non-traumatic, autobiographical episodes are stored. It is argued that this distinction is primarily due to the intense emotionality that accompanies trauma and the dissociative functioning which is triggered by severe emotions. While these horrific events are believed to imprint themselves in implicit memory in fragmented forms, and thus be a veridical representation of the trauma, narrative recall can be in error due to the reconstructive processes which govern it." @default.
