- W2023808427 abstract "To the Editor: We read the recent report by Tentori et al.1 with great interest, and concur with the authors on the importance of fracture prevention. However, Figure 2 is somewhat misleading. It seems to show that differences in hip fracture incidence between Japanese hemodialysis patients and in the general population are small unlike in other countries. In a nationwide study, we found and reported higher incidences of hip fracture among Japanese hemodialysis patients, regardless of age or sex, compared with that of the general population.2 Crude incidences were 7.57 and 17.43 per 1000 person-years for male and female hemodialysis patients, respectively. Age-standardized incidence ratio was 6.2 (95% confidence interval (CI), 5.7–6.8) and 4.9 (95% CI, 4.6–5.3) for male and female hemodialysis patients, compared with the general population.3 The reason for the lower crude hip fracture incidence reported by Tentori et al.1 is currently unclear. Because the vast majority of hip fractures require hospitalization in Japan, it seems unlikely that the different definitions of outcome, i.e., hospitalization due to hip fracture or incidence of hip fracture, have a huge effect on these results. We would emphasize that hip fracture incidence rates between hemodialysis patients and the general population does, in fact, differ significantly in Japan, even though the difference may be less pronounced than those observed in other Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) countries." @default.
