This technology has now been introduced into screening for PKU [5], galactosemia [9] and other diseases [lo]. Though the fluorometric system of Yamaguchi et al. [lo] has the advantages of multiple screening, there seem to be at least two disadvantages. These are use of McCamanRobins method for phenylalanine determination, which is subject to interference, and the requirement for a fluoro-microplate reader, which is expensive. We have developed what we consider to be an improvement of the method of Yamaguchi et al. [9, IO]. The first of our assays is the phenylalanine assay for phenylketonuria (PKU) screening. This new method uses phenylalanine dehydrogenase with calorimetric measurement. We briefly describe this method." @default.
