- W2023881207 abstract "Summary This paper describes an investigation of the properties of surfacing weld metals produced by the MIG and TIG processes using newly developed 1.2 mm dia. Al‐Cu seamless cored electrode wires. Three types of Al‐Cu cored wires with Cu contents of 40%, 45%, and 70% were tested on type A1050P (Al), A5083P (Mn‐Mg‐Al), A7075P (Cu‐Mg‐Zn‐Al), and AC4B (Si‐Cu‐Zn, cast) aluminium alloy baseplates. The results obtained may be summarised as follows. Hardness values at room temperature of HV220–260 for A5O83P and A7075P and HV200–220 for AC4B are obtained in the transverse cross‐sections of bead‐on‐plate welds produced by MIG and TIG processes. The weld hardness increases in proportion to the Cu content in the weld metal on the A1050P baseplate, and a hardness of HV300 is obtained in crack‐free conditions at 52%Cu. Weld metal cracking occurs when the weld metal Cu content exceeds 54%. Hardness measurements at elevated temperatures up to 200 °C show a moderate decrease in hardness, but a sharp decrease at a temperature above 200 °C. Deposition rates by the MIG and TIG processes are 30–40 g/min at 120‐ 180 A and 5 g/min at 100–140 A respectively. The MIG process may be recommended for weld surfacing and the TIG process for base metal hardening. The wear resistance results determined by the pin‐on‐disc test of weld metals produced with Al‐40Cu and Al‐70Cu cored wires suggest improved resistance with an increasing surfacing hardness." @default.
