- W2023883111 abstract "Genetically, tomato is one of the best-studied higher plants. Both morphological markers (genes detected by visible effects on the plant phenotype) and molecular markers (isozymes and DNA clones) have been characterized and compiled into an extensive linkage map of the chromosomes. This paper summarizes what is known about the organization of genes in tomato chromosomes. Even though this plant is a classic diploid species (2n = 24), it harbors numerous gene duplications, many of which are unlinked. The preponderance of such duplications raises questions about the mechanism(s) by which plant genes duplicate. Pepper has the same chromosome number and belongs to the same family as tomato (Solanaceae); yet, when one compares the genetic map of tomato with that of pepper, it is obvious that the linkage groups have been extensively rearranged since these species diverged." @default.
