- W2023883444 abstract "The majority of commonly used formulas are derived from fetuses of appropriate size close to term. These formulas are still widely used in predicting weight of the small fetus despite evidence that no single formula can provide a reliable estimation across the whole weight range. Only few weight formulas were designed specifically for the small fetus remote from term. Theoretically, these formulas can improve weight prediction by accounting for the altered head-abdomen ratio and for growth restriction often found in these cases. Inclusion of volumetric parameters may further optimize fetal weight estimation. In this study 108 fetuses with a birth weight of less than 1600 grams (range from 350 to 1580 grams; mean value of 981 grams) were prospectively examined by 2D- and 3D-ultrasound within seven days before birth. In all cases conventional 2D-measurements and volumetric measurements of the fetal abdomen, upper arm, and thigh were performed. By using a stepwise regression analysis the “best-fit” formula was determined. Our new formula includes volumetric (fetal abdomen and thigh) and 2D-parameters (fronto-occipital diameter (FOD) and femur length). The exact formula is: Fetal weight = 92.491 + 5.499 × thigh volume + 0.430 × FOD3 + 0.005417 × (abdominal volume)2 + 9.021 × (femur length)2, R2 = 0.96.
